For as long as I can remember I had a passion for nature, animals and their behaviour. Four years ago I took the first steps towards making that into a profession by starting a bachelor’s degree in biology at the university of Konstanz. During that time, I spent all the winter term holidays in a conservation project with dolphins in Chile. For my bachelor’s thesis, I looked at their social structure, this was when I first got interested in the topic. This was at a time before my university had the department of collective behaviour and I was lucky enough that a professor from the limnological institute was willing to supervise my thesis. After handing in, I first headed towards marine biology and participated for two terms at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in the highlands of Scotland. While I was there I did more courses related to social networks and association patterns and decided that this was the direction I wanted to take. So I started looking for labs that worked with this topic only to find out that in the meantime probably one of the best opportunities was back in Konstanz. I made contact with the Farine lab and not much later started to work with them as a field assistant and then as a Master’s student, one of my best decisions as a biologist so far.
